When you think luxe work outs in Melbourne, you think Kaya Health Clubs. These beautiful mind & body health clubs in Prahran and the CBD's Emporium specialise in pilates reformer, yoga, barre and offer a number of services in their holistic approach to wellbeing. Koula Ruggeri started Kaya with her husband Christian and we wanted to find out all about their journey and vision for the future of their business.

HL: What is your ideal work-out routine? Morning or night?

KR: Definitely morning. Not only is it out the way but it gets me started for the day and helps me feel great and motivated all day.

HL: We're all about #babeswithbalance – after a day of #bossing it, how do you like to relax and wind down?

KR: I have a 13 month old boy so my wind down comes in 2 parts J - first its to go home and see his beautiful smile when I walk in the door. We have play time, dinner and then bed. Once he is in bed then its feet up on the couch a glass of red

HL: How do you curb your sugar cravings?

KR: Thank fully I don’t have a massive sweet tooth anymore. So if I do want something sweet I tend to go for a piece of dark chocolate – loving the Lindt dark mint atm… however when it is something more like lets say a doughnut from doughnut time- those jam ones are amazing I either talk myself out of it by reminding myself how I will feel afterwards but if that doesn’t work then ill buy on and share t..

HL: Unleash your #girlboss glory – how did you get to where you are today?

KR: Wow – um good question, if I had to pick I would say work ethic, determination and believing in ourselves. I am fortunate to have a husband that has the same qualities and passion so together we work well and motivate and develop each other and have done so for the last 10 years.

HL:  The are a lot of myths surrounding protein for women; particularly the idea that it will ‘bulk’ us up too much. Can you share your thoughts on this?

KR: Over time I have learnt that woman can not bulk up like men can. Unless you are training and dieting for a body comp. general daily exercise a clean diet will not bulk you – in fact we need protein!

HL: What does optimal health mean to you?

KR: Feeling good! For me its important to live a lifestyle that makes you feel good and is achievable. What ever that is – do it for you, no one else.

HL: Favourite part of your job?

KR: The people… from my team to our members.

HL: What is a typical day for you?

KR: A typical day is baby, work, a class when possible, pick up my baby from care, home – doesn’t sound too exciting lol but I love it… on days off I try and get out and be active with my boy..

HL: Favourite quote/mantra to live by for inspiration?

KR: I really believe it always works out in the end and if t doesn’t then its not the end.

HL: The #bestbabes are often the ones who have overcome setbacks. Can you tell us about your own experience?

KR: I would have to say the most challenging time we have had during the last 4 years since opening Kaya is when we opened our second club at emporium. My husband and I work very closely together in all decisions /operations etc of the club. All along it was the 2 of us and then at the same time as opening our second club emporium, I was at home having just had our baby. So a new club and a new born. It was tough – I cant begin to tell you how hard it was! Having a baby and also supporting my husband with the opening of emporium. We got through it and it has shown m that seriously anything is possible – you just need to be on the same page and work with each other – not against each other..

Our delicious balls are now available at Kaya Health Clubs!

Get along to their open days on Wednesday 27th of July at the Emporium & Prahran on the 30th of July. We'll see you there!
