When you're trying to stick to a healthy eating plan, being asked out to dinner can sometimes feel like a massive burden (are they TRYING to tempt me with those loaded fries/tempura prawns/extravagant cocktails??).

We know how hard it is, so we've put together a guide for how to make the best out of your dinner plans without it affecting all of your hard work!

Before you go

Do your homework -Read the menu before you even leave for the meal! Especially important if you have specific dietary requirements, this can save you awkwardly shuffling around and just ordering a piece of toast.

Prior preparation - Have a healthy snack before you arrive. If you’re already starving by the time you head to the restaurant, you’re way more likely to order the biggest thing on the menu. Grab a protein ball or mini tub of yogurt to see you through.

When Ordering

Read into it - Check how it’s cooked! The way that food is cooked can have a huge impact on its overall health benefits. Head straight for the food that’s been steamed, grilled, roasted or poached. Avoid anything that’s described as pan-fried, crispy, or crunchy.

Simplify your drinks - Stick to water or clear spirits! A gin and soda or tonic is a great option if you feel like a drink but don’t want to go for a sugary cocktail. Avoid cider and beer, and stick to white wine if you’re ordering a wine.

While you’re eating

Slow it down - Eat slowly and mindfully. Don’t feel like you have to finish it all just because it’s delicious! The slower you eat, the easier it will be for your body to tell you when it’s full.

Skip dessert - For dessert, try ordering a coffee or tea instead! You can still draw out your meal without ordering dessert, and we bet that someone will give you a pity bite...
