Time Out with Bobbi Brown

Posted by Brittany King on

At Health Lab we're all about inspiring, busy babes so you can imagine how excited we were to get some time with Bobbi Brown!! This queen of cosmetics revolutionised the beauty industry and lead the way in the natural makeup movement (yes the term movement is appropriate!) we all go crazy for. Not to mention she is the creator of the Bronzing Powder that our team of babes simply can't live without!

Her simple philosophy is that “makeup is a way for a woman to look and feel like herself, only prettier and more confident.” This unique approach was a game changer for women who wanted makeup that was simple, flattering and wearable.

These days, Bobbi is quoted just as much on her healthy lifestyle philosophy as she is her beauty tips which made her top on our hit list of brains to pick!

You’re known for your holistic approach to beauty. Why is that so important to you?
I’m a huge fan of eating healthy. I believe that great skin is 70% what you put in your mouth and 30% what you put on your face.

How is this reflected in your diet and exercise routine?
I eat a healthy diet so that it reflects on the outside. To me, being healthy is about incorporating a well-balanced diet and exercise into your lifestyle. It’s really about finding something you’re comfortable with and that you can stick too. I don’t believe in being a fanatic about food, but I know I feel better when I eat better and I try to exercise every day.

It’s also important to get a good night’s rest, drink plenty of water, use a sunscreen daily, limit caffeine intake and not smoke.

You mentioned you try to exercise every day - is there a particular workout you find works best for you?
I try to exercise every day – even if it’s just for 30 minutes. I do a mix of yoga, running, weights, and spinning. The variety keeps exercise fun. Being active keeps me strong, relieves stress, and makes me feel unstoppable. My advice is to just get out there and try everything you can. Whether it’s walking or skiing or swimming, the key is finding an activity that inspires you to get off the couch and get moving.

We can only imagine how busy your life is. Do you find time to relax? How?
On my days off I like to spend time with my family and friends. On the weekends, I like to head to our beach house in Bay Head, New Jersey. When I’m at the beach, I instantly feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

What are your stress relievers?
  • I love yoga – it’s a relaxing form of exercise and can actually help you sleep better at night, all of which shows on your face, giving you a refreshed, well-rested look. It also helps improve blood circulation and remove toxins from the body.
  • After a day at work, I’ll get into bed with a stack of magazines and the television remote. My favourite TV show is Modern Family but I enjoy funny TV in general.
  • And when all else fails, I enjoy a good tequila on the rocks. My favourite is Casa Dragones.

If there was one beauty tip you could share with the world what would it be?
Be who you are. Use makeup to enhance your natural features, not distort them.

What products do you never leave home without?
I never leave the house without concealer, mascara and blush. Concealer is my ‘desert island’ cosmetic—I wouldn’t dream of living without it. When applied correctly, it instantly makes you appear awake and refreshed, no matter what’s going on in the outside world.

Anything else you care to share?
If I wasn’t a makeup artist, I’d be a nutritional chef. I love to cook, and my sons like to help so it tends to become a family activity. I like to experiment and try new healthy recipes.
